Youth Inter-Faith Near Neighbours SMART Project

During October half term holidays,10 young people of Christian and Muslim faiths worked together on a fantastic community arts programme. Young people, aged 14-16, from Newtown, Handsworth and Aston came together to get to know each other and share their experiences. We chatted and discussed topics about creation, faith, education, career aspiration and feeling safe within their communities.

Young people found that they had similar fears and hopes – like losing family to cancer, debt, loneliness and homelessness. They also aspired to have good careers, doing well in school, having peace in the world, and success and happiness within their own families.

Using shared experiences, young people got creative and messy with paint and produced individual pieces of art works that represented some of their hopes and fears of being a young person growing up in today’s society.

It was a fab three days – lots of laughs, good chats, great art and the making of new friendships.

Young people were supported to organise and stage their first art exhibition entitled - ‘Hopes and Fears’ – which toured local community venues in and around Newtown to showcase the art work created by this group.
